Do police officers have to obey the law?

The principle of the rule of law is fundamental to the British legal system. This means that everyone is subject to the law and accountable to it, regardless of their position or power. It's a cornerstone of a fair and just society. Think back to the Magna Carta in 1215, a key document in English history that limited the power of the monarch and established that even the king was subject to the law. This principle has evolved over centuries and is still relevant today. Therefore, police officers, as enforcers of the law, are not exempt from it. They must also abide by the laws they are sworn to uphold. While there might be specific circumstances where they can act outside of normal regulations to prevent a crime or apprehend a suspect, they are still ultimately accountable for their actions under the law. So, the idea that police officers are above the law is simply not true.
